“1st Race, 1st Pole, 1st Win” – Diorama Gallery

I’m so old, I can actually remember 1993.

I can remember excitedly sitting around the television set to watch Nigel Mansell’s first ever Indy Car race – my dad had bought a satellite dish especially, and (as I recall), he’d bought it quite last minute… so instead of it being attached to the wall, it was propped-up on a pile of garden chairs and other make-shift supporting structures. I can also clearly remember that we hadn’t yet worked-out that with satellite EuroSport you had to tune-into the language of the commentary you needed (so we watched the race with a cacophonous mix of multi-lingual commentary all talking simultaneously).

However, none of this changed the excitement for the 10-year-old me. Nigel Mansell was my hero, and the the sight of him winning his IndyCar race was one that has stayed with me ever since.
